Obituary for Marnie Bruce

BRUCE (Clarke)
Majorie “Marnie”

How do you capture the life of someone who lives for 91 years in just a few words? You try. Born in Toronto to parents, Peter and Winnifred Bruce, Marnie and her brother Jim both graduated from Vaughan Road Collegiate Institute. Marnie was a prominent student and a member of the Cheer Leading Team. Marnie developed her outstanding vocal talents and sang with several professional choirs including the Bell Singers in Toronto often performing at the Palais Royale.

Starting her professional career as a music teacher, she soon found her true calling as a champion for women's rights, returning to University as a mother and then leading the first Centre for Women at Humber College. She moved on to the Ontario Provincial Government as Director of the Women's Bureau developing policy and promoting "equal pay for work of equal value". Marnie was head of the Bureau while raising her young family with first husband, Peter Clarke and children Andrew and Julia. She was later lured to go national with the Federal Government in Ottawa where she became Executive Director of Employment Equity continuing her fight for equal pay and fair hiring policies.

Marnie married her second husband Rod Martin, retired from the Federal Government and moved to the country where she grew garlic and enjoyed her dogs Belle and Molly. Her tremendous wit and caring will be missed by her friends and all of her extended family including her four grandchildren, Heather, Peter, Colin and Ada.
