Obituary for James Robert "Jim" King

King, James (Jim), Robert

April 30th, 1948-August 2nd, 2023.

It's with impossibly heavy hearts that the family of James "Jim" Robert King announces his peaceful passing at home on August 2nd, 2023, at the age of 75, following a yearlong battle with cancer.

He'll be profoundly missed by his wife and best friend of 48 years, Penelope "Penny" (née Van Atta), children Christopher (Sarah) and Marissa King, special friends Ken Wightman and Ryan Grevatt, and many cherished in-laws, nieces, nephews, and friends. Jim was predeceased by his parents, Robert and Helen King (née Jardine), sister Maureen Nanni (Dave), many beloved dogs, and a couple of cats.

Lovingly known as "The Big Guy," he believed in equality and standing up for the little guy. Renowned for his uncommon kindness, gentle spirit, quick wit, and good humour, he never met a dog he didn't like or a couch he couldn't nap on.

An avid outdoorsman and nature lover, he found joy in life's simple pleasures and considered every meal an occasion to celebrate. His loyalty, patience and optimism were remarkable, as evidenced by his lifelong Detroit Lions fandom.

He was a journalist, a wordsmith, and a great storyteller but never cared for speeches or formality. His life will be celebrated at the Clocktower Brew Pub in Westboro, 418 Richmond Road, Ottawa, beginning at 2:00 pm on Saturday, September 16th, 2023.

In the meantime, please raise a glass, share some laughs, listen to your favourite song, or watch your favourite movie and fall asleep halfway through in his honour.

The family would like to thank his doctors and care workers for their compassion and support. Memorial donations may be made to the Almonte General Hospital, 75 Spring Street, Almonte, Ontario K0A 1A0.
